African Cuts: Hair File, Looking after your hair Overseas

Heading for new horizons? Your hair is sensitive to change, too, so make sure you take good care of it.
You have decided. You are moving abroad. You've sorted out the ticket, visa, accommodation and maybe even a job. You've packed up everything that's important to you and you are ready to go. In this flurry of activity, it takes a very organized woman to think about her hair and how she's going to deal with it wherever she starts a new life. Getting your hair done at home isn't difficult. Everyone is used to and understands Afro hair. When you are moving to a place were they don't, it becomes difficult and frustrating to care for your beautiful black hair.

As with many other things, the best way to deal with the shock of living in new environment is by planning- even when it comes to hair. For example, before you travel, get your hair done in a style that won't have to be changed for a while. This gives you time to settle down in your new environment and search for the right salon or stylist for you. Braids are a popular choice for this purpose because they can last up to six weeks and still look tidy.

Also, do some research about where you will be staying. If you have friends who already live there, ask them what stylists or salons they use. You can even search for stylists or salons on the internet.

It's quite expensive to get your hair done abroad though, so consider learning hair dressing skills here-even if it's only basic things like how to retouch your hair. Doing so could save you a lot of money. You and a friend could do each other's hair, leaving you extra cash to spend on something else.

Here are a few more tips on Keeping your hair looking good overseas
  • Keep hair moisturised . This can't be emphasized enough. Black hair is prone to breakage when dry,  so steam or deep condition the hair as often as possible.
  • Try not to leave your delicate hair exposed to the elements of a harsh climate - rather keep it in braids or under a weave or even a scarf. Anything to keep it protected.
  • Cold climates and hard water often result in hair loss for many black women. Try not to feel bad about it. Treat your hair with care and hopefully, over time, it'll return to its healthy state.
  • Use oil or grease every day to keep hair looking healthy , and pay special attention to the temple, which is one of the first places hair loss is noticed.
